She physically visited the property while talking to him on the phone. “So I physically walked in the house and toured it myself with him on the phone,” she explained.
After a seemingly successful background check, she was told she was approved and asked to send a deposit of $2,700 via Apple Pay. The prospect of a better life for her family seemed within reach. However, it was all a scam. The scammer vanished with her money, never sending the lease or meeting her for the keys. “Once we paid the rent, he never sent the lease, never met us at the house to give us the keys,” she said.

Her message to others is clear: “I kind of just really want to raise awareness and just to tell people to be more careful. And even though it looks legit, always be a little skeptical.”
